If you are starting out with a small budget, you probably cannot do everything at once. So which comes first, a website or social media? The honest answer depends on one thing: how customers find a business like yours.
Two ways people find a business
They search. Something breaks or a need comes up, and they go to Google. "Emergency plumber near me." "Dentist in Lincolnton." These people want to act now.
They discover. They see something while scrolling and want it. A great looking plate of food, a fresh haircut, a birthday cake. They were not looking, but now they are interested.
Most businesses lean one way. Work out which way you lean, and start there.
Website first, if people search for you
- Home services like plumbing, HVAC and roofing.
- Medical, dental and chiropractic offices.
- Law firms, accountants and insurance agents.
- Anything people look up when they have a problem.
For these, a Google Business Profile and a solid website are the base. Social media helps with trust, but people rarely scroll Instagram when a pipe bursts.
Social first, if people discover you
- Restaurants, food trucks and bakeries.
- Salons, barbers and nail techs.
- Fitness trainers and studios.
- Photographers, artists and makers.
For these, good photos and video on Instagram and Facebook can move faster than a website at the start.
The minimum for the other side
Starting with one does not mean ignoring the other.
A search first business still needs a basic social presence: a Facebook page with real photos and reviews, so people who check you out find something current.
A social first business still needs a Google Business Profile with the right hours and menu, and a simple website with the basics: what you offer, where, when you are open, and how to order or book. Why that matters is covered in do I need a website if I have Facebook.
A quick test
Ask your last ten customers how they found you. If most say Google, put the next dollar into your website and profile. If most say Instagram or a friend's post, put it into photos and video. If most say a referral, you may not need much of either yet.
